Pen and Paper Amazons adaptation
Backup page for:Short version
After amazon is moved, the two squares are filled (and thus blocked):
- one square is where the arrow is shot
- second square is where the amazon piece was standing before the move.
Long version
Amazons is a nice game and if it was possible to play it on a paper, it could be become a game that is played in schools and universities during breaks. But how to adapt the game to paper?
There is no problem with shooting arrows on paper. Arrows stay on field forever and players can simply fill the squares where arrows are shot. The actual problem is moving the amazons on paper. The simple solution, which is proposed here, is to draw an amazon on a new place and fill the square where it stood before. This would be analogous to shooting two arrows in the original game, where one of the arrows is shot exactly to the position where amazon started the move.
Players might play with noughts and crosses, or they can play with crosses of different colours. If playing with different colours this variation can be merged with other variations, such as “Amazons for 3-4 players” (with the placement phase for the 3-player game) or “Partisans” (where the players can move and shoot over own amazons and arrows).
Pen and Paper Amazons plays approximately twice faster than original game. To fix that players may experiment with the field size and number of pieces. But as Pen and Paper games usually tend to be simpler, maybe having a fast-paced game on a 10x10 field is good enough.
If possible - please leave the feedback on these rules, especially if you enjoy playing original Amazons.
